English 2 Lesson 80: What was Horace’s concept of personal ethical cause and effect?

1) Why was Rome significant in the history of Western civilization?

Rome was significant for various reasons. One of them would be the literature written by famous authors such as Livy and Horace. Another thing would be the architecture/art that influences us today. Their beliefs and civilization came, based from the Greek culture. The Romance languages such as; French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, and etc. has been a significant part of western history as well.

2) What was the significance of St. Augustine in Christian history?

St. Augustine was known for his famous quote, “Oh God, thou hast made us for thyself, and our hearts are restless ’till they rest in thee.” This is not just a confession, this is a way to praise God. This quote is his way of praising the lord. Augustine, in my opinion, was famous for his spiritual journey. He was constantly disappointed with the things he believed in. Soon he met St. Ambrose of milan whom soon led him to his new found faith in christianity. This new faith gave him peace and that’s why he’s written that famous quote. His entire spiritual journey has been placed in a simple quote. This was the significance of Christian history.
