Today’s essay topic that I chose is:
What does it mean to say a creature is “intelligent?” Describe some of the intelligent behavior of various animals, and compare it to human intelligence.
By intelligent it means that a creature can do certain things that normal animals don’t do. Their level of intelligence is measured by their combination of skills and abilities in order to adapt to their environment. For example, some of the animals that express their intelligence are; elephants, apes/monkeys, ravens/crows, dolphins/whales, and etc.
Elephants are highly intelligent animals that are self aware of themselves. They are able to recognize themselves in the mirror and recognize other elephants. They are as well as able to express sympathy for the dead/dying. They can also create different kinds of artwork when given the tools for it (personally this was a fun fact for me).
Ravens/crows have been known to open zippers and remove items from bags. So, if you are ever in a situation where your sandwich that you made in the morning got stolen, know it could’ve been a raven or a crow that was really hungry ๐. They are able to recognize traffic signals and just like elephants hold a funeral for the deceased.
Dolphins/whales are no different from the land mammals and have some intelligence of their own. Dolphins are the only kinds of marine animals that have passed the mirror self-awareness test. A dolphin will nudge another dolphin to let him know that he wants to play a game. The fact that both whales and dolphins can communicate with us humans show how greatly intelligent they are.
These were some of the examples of different kinds of animals show their intelligent behaviors that help them adapt in their environment. Thanks for reading this essay of mine. I’ll be posting more soon and have a great rest of your day!
