1. According to your reading and the examples in the slides, what are some of the characteristic features of (a) Mannerism and (b) the Baroque?
Mannerism was a new style of art influenced by the High Renaissance, marked by its exaggeration of physical qualities. Mannerism favors compositional tension and instability rather than the balance and clarity of early Renaissance art.
Around eighty years later, the Baroque style began to gain popularity. The Baroque notably exaggerated motion, and used specific details to evoke emotion.
2. Describe Peter the Great’s program for Russia.
Peter the Great went to explore the ways of western civilization and learn everything he could, so that when he returns he’d be able to put everything he learned and put to practice. He wanted the Russians to embrace this western culture. He won’t be harsh on those that would rather keep old traditions intact, however those people had to pay a fee. One of Peter’s major accomplishments was modernizing the Russian army, which was accomplished by raising taxes.
3. What did Frederick William accomplish?
Frederick William was a member of the ruling Hohenzollern family who controlled Prussia and Brandenburg. As he became ruler, neighboring nations Sweden and the Holy Roman Empire were both weaning in power. Frederick’s biggest accomplishment by far was creating this army, as it guarded the extension of the Hohenzollern family’s power for years to come.
