Government 1A Lesson 65: Is the state the source of human rights?

Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person in the world, from birth until death. They apply regardless of where you are from, what you believe or how you choose to live your life.

My opinion on this is that human rights are rights we have simply because we exist as human beings. And these rights do not come from man, they come from God. He gave us our rights, because we are humans. The state seems like its the source of our human rights, but thats only because we let them, we allowed them to govern us and give certain privileges. A lot of people believe that the state has this much power and they have a right to give us these rights, but they are also human beings just like us, so that means the state simply can’t be the source of human.

We have allowed the state to place taxes on our property(s), which is the continuation of our human rights, giving us licenses to what we can and/or can’t do and what we can and/or can’t have, and a lot of other things. The state and government should be there to help keep things in control and govern in a way thats going to create a better environment for everyone.

Human rights can never be taken away, although they can sometimes be restricted – for example if a person breaks the law, or in the interests of national security. These basic rights are based on shared values like dignity, fairness, equality, respect and independence. These values are defined and protected by law.
